We were referred to Gareth after our beloved deerhound Ernie had a nasty accident when he dislocated his hip in a freak accident. The damage was severe, complicated and required specialist treatment over and above that which our normal veterinary practice was able to offer.
We were able to see Gareth almost immediately and he gave us the options ahead of us in a very clear manner, with the associated costs. What was encouraging early on was that he did not want to do anything too drastic too soon, given Ernie at the time was only 13 months old, rather exploring a staged approach to cut down the levels of intervention. Ernie’s route to getting on the mend was not an easy one and he suffered a couple of early setbacks when procedures did not work because of the complication of the dislocation. Gareth always remained calm and gave us the continuing diagnosis and options and eventually, after the insertion of a permanent steel plate and a temporary stabilising pin, Ernie was able to start rehab in a slow and gentle manner. We were not out of the woods as his wound took an age to close and clear up but Gareth was always there for us to advise the optimum way forward and more than once he saw Ernie at short notice, out of hours, to help treat the wound.
We are well into Ernie’s programme of strengthening and building the hip into as strong a condition as it can get, which, for a young dog, is important as we want him to start enjoying life again after such a traumatic experience (for us as well as him!).
We cannot praise Gareth enough for the time, care, consideration and patience he has shown in treating Ernie. A million thanks!
