Diagnostic Imaging

Advanced in-house imaging for accurate diagnosis and surgical planning - CT, ultrasound, digital X-ray and cardiac imaging available as outpatient services or as part of a full work-up.

Diagnostic Imaging

What Is This Procedure?

Diagnostic imaging gives a non-invasive view of what's going on inside a patient and is the cornerstone of accurate orthopaedic and medical diagnosis. We offer a full in-house imaging service, available either as a standalone outpatient referral or as part of a wider work-up.

Modalities available at AVS include:

  • CT scanning — high-resolution cross-sectional imaging for orthopaedic planning, complex fractures, angular limb deformity, nasal and respiratory disease, and abdominal imaging. Specialist report included.
  • Abdominal ultrasound — detailed assessment of the liver, spleen, kidneys, bladder, gastrointestinal tract and adjacent structures.
  • Cardiac ultrasound (echocardiography) with ECG - specialist evaluation of cardiac structure and function.
  • Digital X-ray — high-quality radiography supporting orthopaedic, thoracic and abdominal investigation.

Outpatient imaging is well suited to cases where a referring vet wants a specific diagnostic question answered, with a written specialist report shared back to the practice.

When Is It Recommended?

An imaging referral is appropriate when a clinical question can be answered by advanced imaging without committing to a full investigation package. Typical scenarios include:

  • Pre-surgical CT planning for fractures, angular limb deformity or hip replacement
  • CT investigation of nasal, sinus or respiratory disease
  • Abdominal ultrasound to investigate masses, organ disease or unexplained bloodwork changes
  • Echocardiography to assess heart murmurs, suspected cardiomyopathy or pre-anaesthetic risk
  • Detailed orthopaedic radiography for cases where in-practice imaging hasn't given a clear answer

Imaging-only referrals are charged as a single inclusive fee and the patient is normally discharged the same day.

Expected Outcomes

The goal of every imaging study is a clear, actionable answer to the referring vet's question. You can expect:

  • High-resolution images interpreted by an experienced clinician
  • A written specialist report shared with the referring practice
  • Direct discussion of findings with the referring vet where useful
  • Onward recommendations  for example a surgical plan, biopsy or further work-up — if appropriate

Recovery Timeline

Clear recovery guidance so you know what to expect at every stage.

1
0 – 2 WEEKS

Initial Recovery

Restricted activity and rest. Pain management and wound care. Short lead walks for toileting only. Your pet will have a follow-up check at 2 weeks for suture removal.

2
2 – 6 WEEKS

Controlled Recovery

Gradually increasing lead walks. Continued restricted activity at home. Physiotherapy exercises as advised by our team to support healing and muscle rebuilding.

3
6 – 8 WEEKS

Follow-Up Assessment

Follow-up imaging to check bone healing. Gradual increase in exercise duration and intensity based on progress. Most dogs show significant improvement by this stage.

4
10 – 12 WEEKS

Return to Normal Activity

Return to controlled normal activity, case dependent. Off-lead exercise can usually be gradually reintroduced. Full recovery is typically achieved within 3–4 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about this procedure.

How quickly will I get the results?

In most cases we discuss the findings with you the same day. A full written report and the images are sent to your referring vet shortly afterwards.

Will my pet need a general anaesthetic for imaging?

Some scans — particularly CT — require sedation or a short general anaesthetic to keep your pet still and comfortable. Our experienced clinical team monitor them continuously throughout.

What imaging is available at AVS?

We use in-house digital X-ray, ultrasound and CT scanning. This means we can investigate complex orthopaedic and medical cases on the same day as your consultation where appropriate.
